Brrrr!!
Rankin Inlet. I think that this is the largest centre that I've worked in- maybe second largest town next to Iqaluit? Airport is going through a huge expansion, there are two or 3 Tim Hortons, the Health Centre has 2 floors...
But it has been cold. The cold days have been only mid minus 30's, but windchills on the windy days are in the "feels like -60". Ya, I'll agree with that!
The Health Centre is right accross the street from the hotel (motel?) that I am staying at- maybe a 100 yards door to door if that. The Northern store is up the hill past the Centre- maybe a 15 minute walk. I take the snowmobile track not the roadway- I don't know really which is safer...
The Northern is pretty well stocked and much more variety that the smaller communities stores.
Conveniently, there is a meat packaging plant a block over from the Northern that cuts, packages and ships local caught product- so I stopped in and picked up a kilo of cubed stewing muskox! The guy was great and threw in a lb of ground muskox as well. I did two different stews with the cubed, and combined the ground with hamburger to make a chili. Ahhhhh! my mouth is watering! My best stews and chili so far! The cubed meat is a little tough and chewy so needs a long cook. For the second stew I pounded the meat to tenderize, then marinaded overnight- worked out great.
Working nights again this go, its generally busy until 11 or 12 then dies off- or not. Most nights I get a chance to "mall walk" 45 minutes with no-one around, and even pull out the exercise band. I miss my bikes and reformer- but I do what I can.
I plan each day to get out the next day and take some more pictures. Apparently I haven't followed through with that. Its supposed to be warmer on Saturday- I'll force myself to go exploring then.
